Important Factors
Two to three tales Victorian mansions are typically large and imposing.
choose between wood and stone. The majority of Victorian styles feature wood siding, but the Second Empire and Romanesque styles almost always feature stone outer walls.
Asymmetrical, complicated shape. Victorian homes, as opposed to the boxy Greek revival style, have wings and bays in all directions.
Decorative edging. Victorian homes, also known as “gingerbread,” are typically decorated with ornate wood or metal trim.
Walls with texture. Victorian siding is frequently embellished with scalloped shingles, patterned masonry, or half-timbering.
Mansard roof or steep, multi-faceted roof. Victorian homes frequently have steep, imposing rooflines with numerous gables facing in various directions. The flat-topped Mansard roof of the Second Empire Victorian style allows for maximum space inside the house.
Porch with one story. A large, wraparound porch with ornamental spindles and brackets is common, particularly in Queen Anne style homes.
Towers. Some opulent Victorian homes feature a round or octagonal tower with a steep, pointed roof.
Colors that pop. Prior to the Victorian era, most houses were all painted the same colour, typically white or beige. Bright earth tones like burnt sienna and mustard yellow were popular by 1887.
Drawback
Rooms in Victorian homes are smaller and have less closet space than in most modern homes. In addition, as with many historic home styles, you’ll most likely need to do some rewiring as well as repair interior plaster and trim to correct house settling.
